What is Invisalign?
Invisalign braces are custom fitted removable, see-through aligners that are a modern alternative to traditional metal braces. They are virtually invisible and because they are removable, provide several benefits that metal braces cannot.
How does Invisalign straighten teeth?
The Invisalign system uses a series of aligners made from a thermoplastic material uniquely developed for the Invisalign treatment plan.
A series of aligners are custom-made for your mouth to move your teeth in a sequence determined by your dentist.
Each aligner will make slight adjustments to tooth position which gradually shift them over time from their current position.
After approximately two weeks, you will begin using the next set of aligners, which will continue the teeth straightening process.
What are the benefits of Invisalign braces over metal braces?
Because Invisalign braces are virtually invisible, no one may even notice that you’re wearing them.
Unlike metal braces, Invisalign aligners are removable. Wearers can remove the aligners to eat and drink what you want and then brush your teeth before putting them back in. Traditional braces can be very challenging to clean.
There are no metal brackets or wires that cause irritation to your mouth. Invisalign braces don’t require metal or wire adjustments, meaning you don’t have to visit your dentist as frequently.
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The aligners are made of a thermoplastic material exclusively developed for the Invisalign treatment plan. If you are familiar with to teeth-whitening trays, they look very similar. The aligners are clear, not colored, and virtually invisible. Invisalign aligners are custom-made for every patient.
How long does Invisalign take to work?
The average length of time for Invisalign treatments in adults is 12 months. The average length of time for a teen patient varies and you will need to consult your doctor. All patients are different and the length of time for your treatment depends on your case.
How often must I wear my aligners?
You will wear your aligners, every day, all day, including while sleeping. Aligners are most effective when worn 20 to 22 hours per day and removed only when eating, brushing and flossing.
How often must I see my Invisalign doctor?
You will have regularly scheduled appointments every 4-6 weeks to ensure that your Invisalign treatment is working as planned.
How much does Invisalign cost?
In most cases, Invisalign treatment is comparable to the cost of traditional braces. However, as with other medical treatments, only your Invisalign-trained doctor can determine the cost, based on your specific needs. Factors affecting the cost may include the difficulty of your case, how long you are in treatment, and your personal goals. Invisalign treatment is covered by many dental insurance policies. You will need to review your personal insurance coverage plan.
What are the benefits of straighter teeth?
The most sought after benefit is an improved smile and the self-confidence that comes along with it.
You will also enjoy healthier teeth and gums. When teeth are properly aligned, gums fit more securely around the teeth, creating the strongest and healthiest defense against periodontal gum disease problems.
Your teeth will be easier to clean and will help support your overall health.
What eating restrictions will I have with Invisalign?
There will be none. You will remove your aligners when you eat, which prevents the types of eating restrictions you might have with metal braces. Drinking water with aligners in is okay, but avoid drinks containing color or sugar. It can get under the aligners causing staining and higher risk for cavities.
Can I smoke cigarettes with Invisalign?
You can but it is discouraged. It can cause staining on the aligners, teeth, and around your attachments.
Will Invisalign affect my speech?
Most doctors say there is little affect on speech but results can vary. Some people say they have problems with “s” and “th” sounds. Others say that speech issues disappeared after a few days when they got used to the aligner. Many people will notice a difference when starting out wearing them.
What happens after Invisalign treatment is done?
You will need to wear a retainer to ensure that your teeth maintain their new and correct straightness. While Invisalign has moved your teeth to a better alignment, without maintenance, they will eventually regress to their original state.
